Why don’t my brake lights go off?

Why do my brake lights stay on when the car is turned off?

Answer:
Often this is caused by an older, weak brake pedal return spring.
When weakened over time, this spring doesn’t have the resilience to pull the brake pedal back enough to open the brake light circuit. That circuit’s switch is mounted directly to the brake pedal assembly.
The brake pedal return spring likely needs replacement.
